Another goal of the project will be to improve public safety for all modes of travel on the reconstructed street; along with the addition curb, gutter, and sidewalks. MRA has contracted with WGM Group of Missoula for the preliminary design work. WGM completed the previous design on California from the river to Dakota Street, and will continue their design efforts south to S. 3rd St. W. WGM is tasked with not only the design of curb and sidewalk, but also intersection alignment and geometry, particularly in the California St./River St./S. 2nd St. area.
The first steps of the project will be notifying the neighborhood and other public stakeholders of the design project. WGM will also be working to identify the California Street right-of-way and property boundary lines in the project area. The design team has already met with the Riverfront Neighborhood Leadership Team and introduced the Project at a general meeting of the Riverfront Neighborhood Council. After completing the right-of-way mapping and meetings with stakeholders, the consultant will began developing design alternatives which will later be presented at a public meeting to gather comments. A preferred design alternative will be identified and developed to a 70% design stage. The design work is anticipated to be completed Spring 2018.
At this time, no schedule has been set for a construction phase. MRA will be working to identify funding partners to complete a funding package for a California Street reconstruction budget.
